Autonomous boats will arrive in Europe in 2017

The waters of the canals of Amsterdam will receive the first robots ships

If the autonomous cars begin to accumulate kilometers by the highways of the United States, to the other side of the Atlantic Amsterdam prepares to receive the first boats without captain.

"Imagine a fleet of autonomous boats for the transport of goods and people," Professor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Carlo Ratti said in a statement from this research center.

The Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions is working on a project that will culminate in 2017 with the first trips through the capital's canals with robot ships.

The scientific director of the Dutch center, Arjan van Timmeren, said that these boats "offer enormous possibilities" and could have application in environmental and health issues, such as detecting diseases in advance once progress is made in relation to underwater robots.

The project will work jointly with researchers from the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Technological University of Delft and the University of Wageningen, the latter two located in the Netherlands.
